                       The 'Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award', the highest sporting honor in the country, will be known as the 'Major Dhyana Chand Khel Ratna Award'. Prime Minister Narendra Modi made the announcement on Friday, shocking millions of Indian sports fans. The Prime Minister made it clear on Twitter that the government had taken such a decision in honor of Major Dhyana Chand, one of the best athletes in Indian sports. The Prime Minister also gave reasons for this. Respecting their sentiments after receiving requests from citizens from different parts of India, the award was named the "Major Dhyana Chand Khel Ratna Award". The government's decision comes a day after the Indian hockey team's long-awaited (41 year old) Olympics, medal. The Indian men's team defeated Germany 5-4 on Thursday to win its first Olympic medal since 1980 years. Despite not winning a medal, the Indian women's team also advanced to the semifinals for the first time and added a new record. Notably, Dhanraj Pillay, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Sardar Singh, Sania Mirza, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Vishwanathan Anand, Rani Rampal, PV Sindhu, Rohit Sharma, Geet Sethi have already won the highest sports honors in the country. The award is given to the pastor and Rs 25 lakh for this prestigious award. Major Dhyan Chand has won three Olympic gold medals (1928, 1932, 1936) in his playing career. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1956. His birthday is celebrated on August 29 as National Sports Day.
