The Taliban are back in Afghanistan

Democracy has collapsed in Afghanistan, and Taliban militants have seized power. In a dramatic turn of events yesterday, the Taliban surrendered to Kabul without bloodshed and President Asraf Ghani fled the country. The Afghan government forces have also surrendered to the Taliban, and the Taliban rule is resuming throughout Afghanistan from today. The Taliban authorities have declared victory on government television channels and said the country is proud of Mujahideen's victory. This morning, Taliban commanders formally held a strategy meeting to take control of the presidential palace. They have called for normalcy in Afghanistan and for the world to extend a hand of cooperation. "We want the embassy in Afghanistan to function as before," the Taliban said in a statement.

The Taliban has called on all Kabul administration officials not to leave their homes until 9 a.m. tomorrow after taking control of the country, and the Taliban has said it will soon implement a new administrative and security system in the country. Just hours after the Taliban entered Kabul yesterday, President Ghani flew to Kazakhstan on a plane. He fled to Oman after Kazakhstan refused to allow his plane to land. Now Ghani appears to be planning to take refuge in the United States. In a statement, Ghani said he had left the country to avoid the floods. "If the Taliban had seized power through the conflict, countless innocent people would have died and Kabul would have been destroyed," Ghani said.
